Pitchwars blog hop: why I wrote this book

I’m thrilled to be one of the alternates in Brenda Drake’s #pitchwars contest for my middle grade novel, Rules for Running Away.

When a 12-year-old girl discovers her dead dad is alive, she runs away with the class klutz to find him.

Everyone’s known for something in middle school. I thought that I’d be known as the Science Wonder. Not anymore. I’m The Girl Who Ran Away.

In Rules for Running Away, a mother always told her 12-year-old daughter that her father was dead. Really, he’s been locked away since before she was born. It seemed like a safe secret, a mother-knows-best secret, and keeping it meant this mother never had to face her shame.

Family secrets haunts me. Specifically, the kind a mother would keep from her daughter. This is a story about lying low from AMBER alerts, finding love, and belonging.

My novel reflects my own experience as a parent raising a diverse family in the Bay Area, which is also where the story takes place.

I’m so grateful to the amazingly thoughtful middle grade writer Stefanie Wass, who has been my mentor.

Thanks so much to C.M. Franklin for hosting this blog hop!… And here’s a big cheer for Stefanie’s mentee, Shari Green. #teammiracles
