The best mattress to have sex on?

by singlemomseeking on February 2, 2010

So, I was chatting with the folks at Natura about the correlation between having both a great mattress and a great sex life. Is there any?

Maybe what these folks really wanted to know is: “Has your new mattress improved your lovemaking?”

First, I came up with a great way to answer that question: I’d make a video to respond to their query, but you know how private the boyfriend is. I would really love to gush about all the details of our sex life, but he won’t have it.

What I can tell you is that that a great mattress has:

  • Has great traction.
  • Doesn’t make any bouncing sounds.
  • Absorbs moisture very well.

But, do you know what’s really  key to a good sex life?

Sleeping on a mattress that is so comfortable that you simply feel better when you wake up.

Your turn:

Tell me about your own sleeping habits.

Do you sleep on curled up in a ball? Do you snore?

Do you dream about scratch and sniff pillows?

Let’s hear it!

I’ll choose one man and one woman through on Valentine’s Day.

Sleeping habits! I have to have ambient noise in the room – last week I tried a new CD of nature sounds — ahh the surf, rainstorm — and then there were MONKEYS! Yeah, the jungle – not as good for sleeping. I laughed at myself for days. You can imagine how surprised I was at that.
Mom has a body pillow she calls her husband “Norman” – when my grandma asked for a body pillow — my mom said she had an extra one in the closet. But she worried it might be too long and stiff for my grandma. Grandma was the first one to start laughing at that. We still are laughing at that.

Ha, @Marie T, I LOVE that one: Your Mom calls her body pillow “Norman”!! I’m laughing, too.

Mauri February 4, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Occasionally, I still sleep with my stuffed monkey I received in the first grade.

Mostly I sleep with my legs curled around a droopy body pillow.

singlemomseeking February 5, 2010 at 1:16 pm

@Mauri: Here’s to sleeping with your stuffed monkey from 1st grade. Sweet.

C’mon, everyone, tell the truth: How many of you sleep with a “stuffy”?

I have an environmentally friendly foam mattress, made of soy, with a pillow top and cover made of bamboo! Sounds elaborate, but really, its just comfortable and good for my back.

I usually end up sleeping on the edge of said mattress because my 5-year-old joins me every night and he likes to snuggle up tight.

MC February 4, 2010 at 5:08 am

Best mattress for sex? Uh….anything? Although in the future, I’m just going to decline to use granite countertops…

For sleeping, not a problem for me except that I never get enough of it. I can sleep on anything especially if it’s not the old, flattened futon I used for years and years. Love my new pottery barn standard mattress!

My adorable, sexy BF is a wonder in bed!—he doesn’t snore or even move very much, he loooves to cuddle, he somehow doesn’t take up much room even though he’s 6’2″ 200 lb, and he lets me steal all the blankets. Oh, and he’s wonderful outside of the bed too (see the aforementioned kitchen countertops and etc!)

Canadian Bald Guy February 3, 2010 at 7:49 pm

It’s strange…when I’m alone in bed I can only fall asleep when I’m on my side.

When I’m with my girlfriend, I can easily fall asleep lying on my back as long as she’s curled up in my arms…although I usually need to turn over on my side at some point in the night.

mg7630 February 3, 2010 at 6:25 pm

I’m still newly separated and having the bed all to myself is still a treat. I roll all over the bed when I sleep!

StudentMama February 3, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Ok. I know this is silly/weird – I bought a bed on craigslist when my ex moved out for $30.00 including a memory foam topper. OMG! It is the best bed ever – much better than our expensive king size bed.

I saw someone mention a cocoon – I do this too. I love it – I feel snuggly and warm. I always stay in one spot and on my back. I actually love sleeping alone lately! = )

Wow, what a find @StudentMama. Here’s to a good topper!

dancingmom February 3, 2010 at 4:13 pm

My mattress is sinking in the middle so my husband and I usually fall to that section throughout the night. Lately he has been complaining of a bad back so I think it is time for an upgrade!

amymarie February 3, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I am still letting little Sadie co-sleep with me. However, neither of us are much of the cuddly type so we usually lay on each side with some piece of something touching in the middle. Sometimes I put my hand gently on her back. Sometimes she forcefully jams her big foot into my spine. But I know these days are going to end too soon and I don’t mind.

As far as sleeping with a man. If that is on the agenda, then Sadie gets an overnight at Mimi’s.

Sex? I vaguely remember sex. I’m cosleeping with my 2 month old. That pillow sounds great. I could use a little luxury.

@Cat: Oh, I remember those days! Sweet…

Anna February 3, 2010 at 2:15 pm

So excited that the new guy doesn’t snore… I totally sleep in the fetal position, and totally need a new mattress (going on 13 years old).

Honey February 3, 2010 at 11:59 am

I sleep on the right side of the bed and Jake sleeps on the left. I usually sleep on my side, facing him…I love to snuggle up to him! He, on the other hand, has a tendency to go onto his back in the middle of the night and snores like a maniac. I often have to retreat to the spare bedroom (since we both prefer this option to my shoving him repeatedly until he either wakes up or rolls over). I’d love to have a sweet-scented pillow to bring with me!

Mike February 3, 2010 at 10:27 am

I really don’t move much while I sleep.

Memory foam mattresses are the worse to have sex on. They absorb all motion so there is no recoil which makes for a lot of extra work.

I toss and turn all night. I usually swap from side to side and unfortunately I don’t bother anyone with this since I sleep alone. 🙂

T February 3, 2010 at 8:56 am

I sleep in a cocoon. So does Rascal. Each of us, when we’re alone, pile pillows all around us and cuddle up to sleep. When we’re together, we snuggle up (til I get warm) and then we build our individual cocoons and sleep.

I dunno. Works for us. I don’t mind snuggling but I have to have my space too!

Gina February 3, 2010 at 8:51 am

I sleep on my side at first, with my back end pushed up against the hubs. (keeps me warm). And then I usually wake up in my 9 year old’s bed to where I am beckoned around 4;50 am every morning.

When hubs is out of town I sleep on his side of the bed in the little trench he’s worn into the mattress.

PS.. love the ylang ylang!

Matthew mmWine Horbund February 3, 2010 at 8:38 am

Ok – I just have to ask because I’m all about getting to the bottom of things
1)The mattress has great traction? Don’t you use sheets on the bed? Wouldn’t that make a difference? Silk = no traction, flannel = tons of traction!
2)Absorbs moisture? Doesn’t everyone have a mattress topper now – a – day? It’s a cross sell EVERY mattress company makes, telling you how it keeps dust mites out of your mattress, as well as absorbing moisture for when you .. uh .. SPILL WINE IN BED!

Sounds like you found the right mattress for you, though! Cheers!

Kelli February 3, 2010 at 8:28 am

I start on my back then go to my side/tummy. My b/f tells me how much I move at night. He hates it. I guess thats why my daughter moves so much too. haha. The more blankets I have the better I lke to be warm and cozy…I like the “heavy feel” too.

These pillows sound awesome!!

Sounds like an amazing mattress. 😉

I always sleep curled up, on my side.

And how yummy! A scented pillow? Awesome!

debra February 3, 2010 at 7:37 am

Scented pillows? This is genius! I change my pillow case every day or so, as soon as the lavendar fabric softener scent wears off. I would love, love, love to give these pillows to my new guy for Valentine’s day!

Corey February 3, 2010 at 7:05 am

Still sleeping on one side of the bed after several years but trying to train myself to sleep in the middle and enjoy it!

Pippi February 3, 2010 at 6:21 am

King size bed (courtesy of the BF), a sweet set of high thread count Costco sheets. I have been told I snore and I also have restless arm syndrome, where I raise both arms in the air like a zombie. My BF doesn’t sleep much, so he gives me a report on what I do or don’t do at night. I always have to start off my sleep on my left side. The Ylang Ylang pillows sound interesting. I’ll try anything to get my BF a good night’s rest.

My bed isn’t as comfortable as it used to be! I bought it when my son was born…I liked it then…but now his full-size bed is more comfy than my queen. Maybe someday I’ll upgrade to a king.

Nicki February 3, 2010 at 4:35 am

Um, yeah, I lost the “I’m sorry bed” in the divorce. (Think Kobe Bryant…) So, it was no great loss. And I have grown rather used to sleeping in the cupboard under the bed…Rachel’s trundle. We have dressed it up and call it Narnia so I don’t feel like such a loser and it is a magical experience that I currently experience…alone.

Some day I will have my dream bedroom. And in my perfect world, the new guy will be sharing it with me…

Karma Sutra February 3, 2010 at 4:31 am

Personally I sleep on a memory foam mattress.

It’s extremely comfortable, however, love making does take some getting used to!

Because the material of the mattress contours to your body, during love making it seems as though my body (or my partner’s) is sinking into the bed. There’s no bounce, no noise, and a bit harder to move from position to position.

Coachdad February 3, 2010 at 12:25 am

My opinion…if you have a good partner and are in tune with eachother, the mattress doesn’t matter. However, sleeping is whole different thing. When I divorced, I lost the California King bed I had slept on for 4 years. Miss it completely and would love to upgrade the mattress and pilows some day.
