Describing a nightmare can make it dissolve

by singlemomseeking on November 18, 2009

American BabyThank you all SO much for your virtual hugs this week. I really needed them, and I can’t tell you how much your words mean to me.

I’ve spent the past few days facing my fears and doubts. When I’m vulnerable, I really do get angry. Oh, man, do I.

I’m trying to channel all that angst into something positive. I’ve written letters and talked to the cops. I’ve stopped people on my street to talk and joined my local Neighborhood Watch.

I was doing some reading online tonight (yeah, like every night!) that led me to this Los Angeles Times review of Bad Mother, A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace, Ayelet Waldman.

It was this quote that finally reminded me that I HAVE to get this book, which I’ve wanted to read since last summer:

“Because motherhood is all about fear — warding it off, facing it, explaining it away, dealing with it in the middle of the night (yours, theirs, everyone’s). Bad Mother… is about facing your fears, your mistakes, your shortcomings, openly and honestly — in that wonderful way that describing a nightmare can make it dissolve.”

Thank you ALL for helping me make that nightmare dissolve. (Today, a friend kindly pointed out that those guys didn’t actually ROB my home — there was no a confrontation or fight. Instead, they were just some heartless burglars who will get caught.)

Tonight, I went to kick boxing class and mentally kicked some butt. My adrenaline has slowed to a regular pulse. So, here I am, feeling stronger than ever. I’m remembering what really matters: love, laughter, family, friends, your child’s smile, tenderness. And more, right?

Read the book! Single Mom Seeking is a tell-all about how to date and remain a dedicated and involved parent. It’s a spunky, sexy, and moving chronicle of the humor, pitfalls, and rewards of balancing it all — single-mom style.

I know it can be a challenge in tough times to put life in perspective and find the good. I have learned over the last few months that life can always be worse…

A few of the mantas that have helped me during this…

*This, too, shall pass.
*Change is good.
*It just takes time.

They’re all true. I’m finally on the mend and I wish the same for you my virtual friend. Always sending hugs your way and wishing you the best. You’re never alone!

That’s my girl! Rachel you have survived MUCH worse than the loss of material things. And now you’ve been led to learn more about your neighborhood. Now you’re going to read a book that you’ve been putting off. Now you’re learning more about yourself, your strength and your resilience.

You, my sweet, beautiful friend, kick ass.

Mwah!

Sounds like a great book; one I might need to read also.

When times are tough we do learn and grow stronger becasue of it but personally, I’m tired of learning how strong I can be.

Glad to hear you are doing well.

@Mindy Mom, re: “I’m tired of learning how strong I can be.”

Oh, I hear you mama!! I’ve had this thought SO many times recently, through tears.

I 100% agree with that. I’ve been trying to find a statue of Sisyphus to symbolize the struggle.

I guess the trick is to learn to enjoy the challenges and face those fears.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of parenting can be fear based. Sometimes it does feel love based though.

Bad Mother is a great book; a must-read! I also liked and have a well-read copy of ‘Confessions of a Slacker Mom’ by Muffy Mead-Ferro.

And I think every woman of child-bearing age should read Stunned: The New Generation of Women Having Babies, Getting Angry, and Creating a Women’s Movement by Karen Bridson.

If only we could arrange for a giant book swap…

Glad for this post. I was getting worried about you.

One thing that helps me to destress is to blast Incubus’ Pardon Me and dance to it. (Kickboxing to it would be good, too). I can sooo relate to that song
