For the past few weeks, Dr. Leah and I have had a little secret up our sleeves.
Publishers have been contacting us about forthcoming single parent books. Well, we didn’t have to do any in-depth surveys to figure out that most of you are avid readers.
So, we couldn’t think of a better way to jump into spring than to launch an ongoing Mother’s Day book contest (this is only the first post!) at Singlemommyhood.
One of the first books we’re giving away (5 copies!) is Mary Pols’ Accidentally on Purpose.
We’re giving away a total of 15 single mom memoirs… the contest is here!
It’s one of those memoirs with a long subtitle (“A One-Night Stand, My Unplanned Parenthood and Loving the Best Mistake I Ever Made”) that, as Mary puts it, gives “away a lot (but not everything).”
A native of Maine, Pols has spent most of her professional life as a journalist in California — and today she’s a film reviewer for Time magazine! Her son, Dolan (below), is now four.
There’s a funny story behind Mary and me. When I first heard about Mary’s book deal a couple of years ago, I was so excited. Not only did she sound like an amazing woman, writer, and mom — but she lived in my neck of the woods. So, I sent an Mary an email to the Contra Costa Times, where Mary was a film critic.
And I never heard back.
Well, I wrote Mary off as one of those I’m-too-good-for-you writers. Just after Mary’s book was published in 2008, however, we were both invited to guest blog back-to-back on Glamour’s Storked. That’s when I got a random email from Mary:
“I was just checking out your Storked your post for today — and finally I put two and two together… you sent me a really nice note after reading about my book deal. which feels like eons ago. So long ago that I don’t remember if I even thanked you. But the reach-out was really sweet. And I appreciated it!”
We have since become friends, and I think that Mary is one of the sweetest, smartest — and funniest — woman I know. You can read my Q and A with Mary here — and your interesting comments about condom use!
