Hot chick? Advice, please.

spinnin

I recently asked my new guy if he wanted to work out with me.

Here’s how it happened: He was asking if I had any free time during the week to get together, and I explained that any breaks in my schedule (not many!) find me at the gym in the evening. (I wasn’t about to give up my evening cardio classes. No matter how cute he was.) Even though I’m not a biker, I’ve started to spin during the week, when I’m not kickboxing. All that jumping during kickboxing can be hard on my knees and ankles, so spinning has been a good addition.

Anyway, he’s an avid cycler who climbs those really steep Bay Area hills.  But he has never taken a spinning class. So, this week, I invited him as a guest to my gym, and he said: “I’d love to come.”

There was another bonus: he also got to meet my single mom friend who works out with me. (And, yes, he passed the potential boyfriend bogus test!)

Who knew that working out together could be so sexy? For an hour, we spun side-by-side, sweating, and on the way out of class, however, he had something to tell me: “I think I’m going to join the gym.”

Me: “You are?”

Him: “Yeah, I’ve been thinking about joining a gym for a while, and that class was really great.”

Me: “Do you really think I’m buying this?”

He reached out and offered to fill up my water bottle.

Me: “Look, if this doesn’t work out, I was spinning here first. Okay?”

Fortunately, he gets my dry sense of humor — and he laughed.

Which leads me to back this week’s spin class.

My all-time favorite spin teacher is Robert, whose class is a mix of exercise and performance art. It’s not just about cycling. We sing along to the lyrics — loudly. (Maybe this is how Robert makes sure that we’re breathing?)

Robert also loves to hop off his bike during class to “play” his blow-up air guitar — or shake maracas in between the stationary bikes. For real.

Every once in a while, Robert announces a give-away contest: one student can win a copy of the evening’s spin mix. (He never fails to add a joke: “So, you not only get the CD, but there’s a Cadillac waiting downstairs for you.”)

It’s easy to enter the contest: all you have to do is write your name on the back of your spin ticket, and a winner is chosen at the end of class.

I should have known better. In a rush to set up my bike, I let my guy fill out my name on my ticket. I didn’t even think about it.

So, here we are, at the end of class, and it’s time to choose a winner from the hat. Another student reaches into the hat and reads out loud in front of 40+ folks:

“Hot chick.”

Silence. Robert seems confused. So, he takes the ticket and repeats out loud: “Hot chick.”

All of a sudden, my cute spinning partner is pointing at me. WTF?

Robert catches on: “Rachel is the hot chick!”

Me: Blushing.

Sure, I was thrilled to win the CD. But I’m not sure how I feel about this new nickname.

hot-chick

In the hallway right after class, someone whizzed by me: “Hey, hot chick.”

Oh, swell.

Here’s what I want to know. Are we moving too fast?

We haven’t even changed our Facebook statuses…. and now we belong to the same gym?

What do you think?

Is this the guy you posted about the other day?

I say there are no sure rules to moving too fast or too slow.

Oh, duh!! I should have read the link it is him.

Girl, have fun and don’t worry about what is too fast or not too fast. You jokingly set the rule anyway ;)

I have nothing to offer on too fast or too slow, other than to trust your gut. That is so powerful, and won’t mislead you.

I wanted to comment on you not feeling sure about the nickname he gave you. You mentioned he gets your dry sense of humor. I think you might have to get his silly sense of humor. It’d likely mean something to him.

Finally, I’d really like to know what exactly spinning is. Help?

Oh Rachel… I love him. And I heard ALL about Robert’s class from you. You’re sharing your favorites with him and he likes them too.

You are indeed a hot chick.

And he sounds perfect so far.

Enjoy him!

Silly me, Won! I will add a link to spinning, which is really just a fancy word for aerobic indoor cycling.

Here’s a great explanation: http://www.wellsphere.com/spinning-article/spinning-101/3160

Thanks!!

If he wanted to join the gym on a couples membership or something, that would be creepy…but just to join on his own is not a big deal to me. Be careful about getting into a routine where you’re always working out together, but I don’t think there’s any problem with you both belonging the same place. I think he sounds awesome!

Won – Spinning is a class that’s done on stationary bikes. It’s more than just pedaling for an hour…it actually looks like fun!

I’ve seen pictures…I’d have to concur with hot chick.

:-D

To me, it seems a bit fast to join the same gym…but as Kari mentioned, there aren’t really any rules. Whatever feels right, you go with.

I love the “hot chick” thing

I am wary of the him joining the gym but that may just be my hang-up. Your comment “I was spinning here first” however does reflect some hesitation on your part

If your comfortable with it, thus it feels OK, then definitely.

I’ve never really got the gym, my wife got me to join hers and we just messed about. We had a good time, but didn’t really exercise. Not there anyway.

:) Thanks for the very-much-needed laugh for my manic Monday!

What a sense of humour he has, nice! This is what I look for in a guy, once had this guy who made me laugh every day with his lovely humour. I miss that!

Enjoy your new guy, and don’t worry about the facebook status, maybe changing it comes later, maybe it won’t. Don’t rush into that, but rushing into a relationship with this guy, why not?

About the same gym, you did mention you were there first, just in case things don’t work out between you two.

P.S I like spinning classes so much!

First off, congrats on the new beau! Of course, if things get real real serious, does that mean you have to change the name of your blog? I hope not. I think its cool you guys are working out together. As the saying goes, “A couple that sweats together stays together.”

Well, you are hot aren’t ya?! I mean, spinning, kickboxing, blogging — doesn’t get much hotter.

Sounds like you guys are off to a good start. There could be worse things to blog about at the beginning of a relationship. So, congrats to you and enjoy the ride (pun intended)

FB status, do people even read those?!

Last summer I met a beautiful Scottish man at a BBQ. Strangely enough, he had just joined my muai thai gym! I have to say, I definitely enjoyed seeing him in his muai thai shorts… ‘Muay’ caliente!!

As far as your relationship progressing too quickly? You know what, we only live once, and while it’s important to keep our heads, it’s equally as important to enjoy ourselves. As you told your new fella, you joined the gym first!

I think it’s great that you’re going to be working out together. My old boyfriend from high school (not the jerk I married, but another one) used to work at Bally’s and sold me a lifetime membership. He was my personal trainer for a while and we had a lot of fun.

When you’re dating someone you can find all kinds of ways to spend time together while getting to know each other in the process; I say go for it and enjoy it as long as it lasts.

As for FB statuses, I’m sorry I missed that post on Singlemommyhood. I have a lot of feelings about that subject…;-)

Actually, I don’t even list my status on Facebook… After all, they don’t have an option for “single mom seeking”!
