Mae and I are leaving for New York City in two days to visit friends, family — and editors. Hopefully, I’ll see my former UPS man, too.
One single dad reader — who shall remain unnamed — just dared me in an email to “cut loose.” He says that jumping the UPS man will be good for me “because you genuinely want him, and have for years. And because it will be good for your ego, and especially good for you to get a renewed taste of the juice that makes life so f-ing magical!”
Whew, re-reading that just now made me feel a little weak. Mmmmm. This male reader also gives me one last word of warning: “Whatever you do don’t lose your mind and confuse lust and love!”
Got it.
Mae and I will be staying with the same friends who’d set me up on my first-ever blind date as a single mom.
We’ll also see Mae’s uncle — her father’s oldest brother — whom we call “Uncle Moody.” I’ll be forever grateful to Mae’s uncle for being there for his niece. He calls. He sends care packages to her.
But Uncle Moody is afraid of heights, and Mae knows this. Somehow, she always gets him to ride the ferris wheel in Times Square. I promised him that no one would ever see his face when he rides a ferris wheel — but here’s a photo of little Mae asking him to buy her somethin’ new. Whenever she says, “Uncle Moody, will you get this for me?” he turns into one big softy.
And get this: super-woman Seal publicist, Andie, just emailed me that I’ll be on Candace Bushnell’s live radio show. You can catch the Sex and the City author asking me about Sex and the Single Mom on Thursday, August 21, 6 - 8 EST.
This weekend, we’re spending a few days in Connecticut with my best friend from college. Then, we’re taking the train to NYC. Do you have tips about what we should do in Manhattan while we’re there? It will be hot — perhaps in every sense of the word?
P.S. I’m letting the single dads take over Single Mom Seeking while I’m gone. Talk about a loss of control. Seriously, I’ve chosen a great group of guys, if I do say so myself. I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Have a great trip! Don’t think about the blogosphere. Enjoy Central Park. Eat at Lupa in the Village. Ask the female bartender for the cocktail she named after me. (Haha. She probably used that line on every guy.)
I’m totally jealous - I need a NYC vacation soon!
Wow! Sounds like a great trip. An interview with Candace Bushnell! How cool is that?!? Congrats girl. You gals have a blast!!
Uh oh, you’re letting the guys take over? There’s no telling what this place will look like when you get back!!!
Ha! Just kidding guys!! I can’t wait to see what you boys have to say…
Just bite into the Big Apple and enjoy all its juiciness … you can read into that what you will
I’m so happy for you girls, getting to go on a trip and no doubt having a great time. And I love the advice from the single dad reader. I agree! If the opportunity presents itself, be bold. Be daring. But be careful!
Your radio show stint is on the eve of my birthday, but I will try to figure out how to catch it. Sounds interesting…
I hadn’t heard you mention Uncle Moody since your book, so it is absolutely wonderful that Mae Mae will get to see him, and that he stays in touch. That is awesome.
I could go on and on about shopping in New York (and New Jersey since it’s tax-free), but you probably know where to find the great deals since you lived there. When I go to NY, shopping is a must! So buy something for both of you…
And again, have a GREAT time.
Fondly,
LEM
Oh wow sounds like a wonderful trip!!!
And I totally agree with your male reader’s advice . . .and also to be careful! Sometimes realizing a little fling like that can do wonders for all the senses . . .and ego - that is, if you need it. If it will only complicate life, then don’t bother! Oh, now I’m getting jealous
Seriously, girls, have a wonderful and safe trip. We’ll be kind to the men you’re leaving in charge.
Have a great time!!
The last time we visited NYC we went to see the Statue of Liberty…at the request of my daughter. She really enjoyed it.
Oh, I am so excited for you. I live 5 hours south but haven’t been to NY in way too long. A city trip is a must! I just say - enjoy every moment whatever it is you find yourself doing. NY has a vitality all its own.
You are a brave woman, leaving this wonderfully kept site in the hands of a few bachelors! (I am sure that your readers can keep them in line - or maybe not!)
Rachel, Rachel, Rachel! You know what I think about jumping the UPS man…but I LOVE the idea of hearing you on the radio. Is it available on the internet? If so, send details and I’ll tune in.
I hope you have a fun trip. Have a great time. Good luck with the radio show! I’m looking forward to hearing from the single dads.
Here’s the $64,000 question: if you do jump the UPS man, will you be blogging about it? Whaddya think?
Oh shhh, you got yourself on Candace Bushnell, because you are so AWESOME!
Can’t wait to read about your trip, Rachel — mmmm, all of it, right?!
Have fun.
ENJOY! Sounds like fun!!
Rachel,
Jump on everything in the city: shopping, food, free music in the village and of course, the UPS man. I agree with the anonymous guy—have fun–and make it just that—fun (wink, wink) and return to the west coast with a big smile.
Sounds like a fun trip - be sure to send postcards. =)
You go girl… have fun in the big apple, and don’t be afraid to let you hair down and seize the moment! Try and catch some top shelf live jazz one night when you are not riding the proverbial UPS van/man!
If Candace Bushnell will be asking you about sex and the single mom, wouldn’t it be apropos to have a story in your back pocket that still makes your knees weak, and which you can still virtually taste? Besides, this is the kind of juicy story Candice is desperating seeking!
Hey boys… Rachel has turned the reigns over to us… is this the best you can do?
First single dad post should be titled “Why I hate Polly Pocket” or “Cage Match - Brats vs Barbies”
Every time I see a picture of Mae looking so adorable, I have to go back and read more Mae stories. And that photo of her and her uncle is just fabulous.
Next trip to NYC, let me know and maybe we can take our girls to a show together!
