Squeezing in a date before the birthday gala

Thanks to all of you for the birthday wishes!

While my little sister and M baked the 8th birthday ice skating cake (above) — which turned into a frosting party that yours truly got to clean up — I went on a date with the Biologist. We went downtown to a little swank bar, where he gave me a lesson in Belgium beer. Mmmmm.

The next day, the party was a tad stressful, with 20 hungry girls screaming “pizza!” at the ice skating rink (they’d given our pizzas to another party!) Thanks to my single mom friends — along with a divorced dad in M’s class — who jumped up to serve snacks. Fortunately, I got the honor of going one round on the ice with my eight-year-old. We held hands.

P.S. The winner of Ian Kerner’s just-published book, Sex Detox is Kat Wilder who wrote that she enjoys dating now, as the “middle-aged divorced mom of a teenager,” because “dating is stripped of wanting things from it — wanting a husband, kids, the American Dream.’ All I want to do is meet interesting people and see what kind of connection we can have. So that has been very freeing.”

Gotta love Kat’s attitude! Tell me: Do you feel free? Can dating as a single parent can be freeing?

Read the book! Single Mom Seeking is a tell-all about how to date and remain a dedicated and involved parent. It’s a spunky, sexy, and moving chronicle of the humor, pitfalls, and rewards of balancing it all — single-mom style.

I guess if my son were a teenager and I didn’t have to worry about him (that is a GINORMOUS ‘and’ there) it would be “freeing”. I expect that when he is out of the home it will be a totally different experience ( I am actually counting on it!!!!). Until that day comes, dating will still be rather restrictive actually. I have a bit of a special needs child. Dates can be very temporary escapes. Relationships have to factor in a slightly out of touch with reality (or at least pop culture) single father that has possibly just crossed the threshold of insanity and a very unique and special boy. I really can’t wait to have that freedom that Kat describes. :-)

Thanks for the honest, open comment CCDad. I hear you about a date feeling like a temporary escape. Good for you for remembering your own needs. It sounds like you have a very special, understanding girlfriend.

:-) I do have a very special and patient girlfriend. I often wonder what she sees in me, especially lately as I have been anything but a pleasant person to be around.

It was good to hear that M had a great party! “At recess, in the ring”, or rink in this case. :-) 20 screaming children sounds like a great time!
