Readers, all your talk about lining up hot dates for Valentine’s Day (yes, you, One-Woman Show!), and there are no two ways about it, I want one, too.
Yes, this holiday is cheesy and overdone, but I can’t remember the last time I went out on real, live date on Valentine’s Day.
I’ve been in retreat mode for months, holding onto the rope that keeps me inside. I’ve been working long hours after Mae goes to bed (editing one textbook after another), and then swallowing up at least one novel a week after I get into bed. I’m taking a bow for being compassionate with myself. I’ve seen a string of movies alone, I’ve collected fallen leaves with my kid, I’ve gone to a weekly yoga class.
And even though it’s raining, cold, and gray today, I want to see if I can line up a cozy, silly date for V-Day. Do you think I can?
When Valentine’s Day arrives, I don’t want to be eating sour hearts. The Israeli and I were done almost one year ago, and he’s still like a smudge on my subconscious blouse that I’m trying to rub out — but the harder I try, the worse the stain looks.
It’s time for me to move on — don’t you think?

Yay! Yes! It’s time - get back out there! This time you will be smarter about it, having learned a very hard lesson with the Isreali. In the next few weeks leading up to V-Day - keep your eye out for single guys at the coffee shop, in the park - wherever. This is one of those rare opps for a great pick up line. Initiate a conversation about something in the environment. Then here’s the line you throw in:
“You’re adorable! Do you have a date for Valentine’s Day?” If his answer is “yes” - you say, “cool..see ya later.” If he says “no” - you’re in!
Men love being asked out! Gives you a total edge and boosts the odds of snagging him. Can’t guarantee anything but I can guarantee a guy won’t land on your doorstep. Go get ‘em!!!
Yes, it’s time, Rachel! Come to Madison and I promise I’ll fix you up!! xo, g
Ms. Single Mama: Just go right up to him and ask him out? Oh my– I think I might need to ask a couple of warm-up questions first! You’re brave.
Gail: Ah, thanks! I’ve heard about the cute college guys in Madison… Just kidding.

Sweetie, it’s time to move on, so go for it!
And even if we both end up emailing each other on Valentine’s Day after our kids are in bed after a boring evening at home, we’ll get what we’re looking for one day.
(It turns out I DO have my kids with me on Valentine’s Day itself, which maybe in a way is most fitting…but I’m still angling for that date on the 15th AND the 16th!!)
