Ever since I could vote, I’ve known months beforehand which box I was marking on the ballot for President. It has always been a no-brainer.
But not this year.
For sure, I’m voting Democrat. But I still wonder: Which candidate will do his/her best to support non-traditional families like mine?
I’m talking about affordable health insurance and daycare, and more funding for schools and libraries. It’s simple for me because it’s all about the basics in life. (Are any candidates talking about love? Not that I know of.) I’m doing lots of reading, especially the single parent political columnists.
There’s no doubt that Barack Obama is reaching out to get the support of single parents. Like Christine at Glamour, I’m attracted to the fact that Obama was raised by a single mom (his dad left when he was two). In San Francisco last week, he talked to single mothers about his plans for tax relief for the middle class — to give $500 tax credits to offset payroll taxes — and about businesses that allow flexible work schedules.
On the other hand, Hillary Clinton sure has years of experience in office. I had the chance to hear her speak in person over 10 years ago, during my 24/7 reporting days, and I’ll never forget her self-confidence. I’d love to see a woman as president — at last — but I know that I shouldn’t vote on that reason alone.
For some single parents, the choice is clear. Is it for you?
Tell me who you’re voting for — and why.

I really like Obama, but he’s clearly so green and naive to look back fondly upon that old sotto voce racist Roonie Raygun and all that rottenness he stood for. It’s a carefully manicured sort of ‘cross over appeal’ that’s better left for the main election rather than the primaries where we really ought to know better. Krugman is right, Obama is playing us for fools here. And no amount of inspirational talk can paper that fact over. Cheers & Good Luck! ‘VJ’
VJ, ah ha, thanks for pointing out that I didn’t even mention Edwards… of course!
I’m unsure myself. It’s between Obama and Clinton for me because I don’t think anyone else (Edwards included) has a shot and I don’t want to waste my vote. I’m leaning toward Obama, but I still have to do more research. I feel a little helpless though, being in Florida. You know this state is going to end up voting Republican in November anyway (SIGH), but I’m going to vote Democrat and hope more people like me show up to the poles and I’ll be proven wrong.
polls, not poles. LOL, it’s not a strip club.
Who am I voting for? No idea. But I have some opinions and I’ll try very hard not to rant.
I’m all for a candidate that represents single parents. Someone that not only understands the challenges, but can actually do something about them.
Healthcare. Most of the commercial world has single, single plus one, and family for health plans. The federal government, and I worked there, offers only single and family. The people we are voting for, voted for this. There is also a big move towards High Deductible Health plans. I was just moved to one and had to spend over $2,000.00 out of pocket in the last three months (before Christmas) before the health plan would pay anything. That was just for my son. If I go to see a doctor, I have to pay the same amount for me too before they cover anything. I only save money if I either do not go to the doctor, or go a lot (and even then there are restrictions). Single plus one seems to be a real financially painful number with respect to everything else though.
I love math, and I love problem solving, but taxes just make my head hurt. I can file head of household, but during the year I am taxed at the single rate. Why not let single parents be taxed at the lower married rate? Does anyone really know if filing head of household evens it out in the end? Or are single parents still penalized for not being married?
Single parents need more time off from work. There is only one person to take the child to ALL appointments. The government may not be able to force companies to give more time off, but the government can have a better tax code that can help single parents give the care to their children that their children deserve. Right now the taxes and laws seem to punish single parents.
The Republicans and Christians ( I know because I was one each for a long time ) believe that giving extra help to single parents will entice more people to have children outside of marriage and will do more harm to children and families in the long run. In the mean time, they are hurting the children they keep saying they want to help. When I became a single parent I received two phone calls from my church (months apart and both when I was at work), but no one ever came by to see me or offer support.
I have been looking for a house to buy. I have been looking at tax and real estate records. I see a lot of greed in what has happened over the past several years. Since when has real estate ever jumped over 100% in a four-five year span? Every banker and investor out there saw what was happening, and instead of being prudent they fueled the fire. With record low interest rates, banks couldn’t push out loans fast enough, homes were being bought like mad so prices went up, mortgage companies started offering “plans” to “help” a lot of people into homes that they couldn’t afford, investors saw the opportunity to make big profits so they invested in mortgage firms, cities and counties see property values skyrocketing, so they raise property taxes and assessments, and prices kept going up, and people that should have known better kept getting greedier. Anyone with any sense could see that interest rates wouldn’t stay low forever, and that when the market turned, first time home buyers can’t afford $300K mortgages at 7% interest, and people that had risky loans weren’t going to be able to pay $2-3,000 a month for mortgages at the new rates. It seems to me that every time bankers and investors get together on something, the whole country pays for it. Congress should have known better and now they have a mess they can’t begin to comprehend how to clean up. Er, I think I ranted.
These are our candidates. These are some of the issues. Which one can get businesses stimulated to create jobs and profits? Which one can do something about the needs of single parents? Which one can effectively deal with foreign policy? Which one will help me keep my job?
I have to go with VJ on this. Edwards is my pick - although I am afraid that he will not get the nomination. I am not opposed to Clinton or Obama and will vote for either one of them in the final election - but I will be very disapoointed that Edwards did not get the nomination. I wish we could put all three of them in some type of disguise where they all three looked the same and you couldn’t SEE any difference you could only focus on what they said about the issues. Of course - they’d also have to refrain from giving any “personal” clues about thenselves. Sadly some people will go to the polls and cast their ballot based on what’s hanging- or not hanging down below or color of skin wihtout ever knowing anymore about the candidates than what they hear on TV or read in an email on the interent. Truthfully I’ll be thrilled to death the day we elect someone other than a pasty white guy! It will show that we are finally moving in the right direction. BUT I’ve got to vote on who I think is the best for the job. It just happens to be Edwards in this case - with Obama being my next choice. But honestly - and I hope I don’t hurt anyone feelings - but I think just about anyone would be better than the pasty white guys in the White House now!
But no matter who you vote for - GOOD for you to just go out there and do it!
No not Obama! No Not McCain!
Neither of the them!
I was one of the many many supporters of Ron Paul who was by far the best candidate, don’t car what party, its the issues and the platform and the voting record.
Considering that Ron Paul is no longer a candidate for President of the United States And the Chooses of both the democrat and republican parties are lacking both principle and integraty. I have to say that the third choose of a third party is in order.
Bob Barr Libertarian Candidate is my choose and I hope he will be yours too. If its not Barr than in 4yrs we will all be having the same old political discussions again. What have the Republicans or the Democrats Done?
