My Life

“Dating bitter single mom”

goal.jpgWho me? No!

I’m in full wind-up mode over here with the start of the New Year. Are you? It’s the first time in days that I’ve had a few hours to get my mind wrapped around work again. (My animal-loving daughter is off at the zoo. The Oakland zoo, not the San Francisco one where a tiger escaped.)

This morning, I was inspired by Single Ma’s Fabulous Financials to write down my 2008 “To Do” Goals. Just a few years ago, my goals included getting sole custody of my daughter and setting up my will. Done! Done! Now that I’ve checked off a few legal boxes on my list — including renewing our passports in 2007 — I’m moving onto bigger dreams, like owning my own home one day. Let’s see if I can increase my monthly income this year and make it a real possibility.

P.S. Single mamas, if you haven’t signed up for Single Ma’s daily email, do it now. She will inspire you to chop-chop and get on the ball financially.

How do you plan to kick-start your career and finances this year?

For instance, Do you have a savings account? Do you have a retirement fund?

If one of your goals is to take better care of yourself (like me!), have you signed up for a class? Or found an exercise-buddy?

How about your parenting plan? Do you have mama-goals, like me? I just found a brand-new keyboard for Mae on Craig’s List ($25!) because she wants to learn how to play the piano. Let’s see if I can find her a hip teacher.

I also plan to get this blog running smoothly, because there are still some, uh, technical issues. My blog stats here are still not working. Crap! My dad raised me to get things done pronto, and since I’m still getting a handle on the ins-and-outs of setting up a blog, I’m running into a wall over here. I do find it amusing, however, to see the searches that lead readers to Single Mom Seeking.

For instance, “terms used to find this blog” this week include:

  • I married a single mom
  • dating bitter single mom
  • lactating
  • “looking for a boy toy”
  • how many 35 year old men are single

  2. Out of interest I was reading all the subjects, but found this very interesting. Reminded me that I need to do a will as well as life insurance. Thank you for the reminder. Financially I am going back to school so that in 4 or 5 years I will be able to have a stable and larger income for my girls and I! I never used to resolutions, I like goals better! Thank you again!

  4. Well, I have to admit, I Googled ‘dating bitter single mom’ and found this site, too, while looking for advice for, well, dating a bitter single mom because I am doing just that. Pleading with the Internet for answers on how to break through with this seems desperate, but I might just be. She has been beaten and lied to by men and now she is so bitter that months of courting her (and falling HARD for her) have not even started to soften her heart. Her daughters are my greatest advocates, probably because I bring flowers instead of hit their mother, but I am getting no where. How can I hear “you are the best man that I have ever had in my life” from such a wonderful woman and give up? Help…

  5. Hi, Andy,

It seems that after “months of courting” this relationship is kind of one-sided as you’ve described it.

I don’t believe it’s necessary to suffer for love…or to love. Love is a sunrise where two people share a pot of coffee together. It’s a bridge that puts sugar in your coffee and half-and-half in hers. And it’s a celebration that this is the best dam* coffee you’ve ever had — even if you switch cups! Sure, sh** happens in even the best relationships. But with willing partners stuff can be worked out most of the time.

And her being a single mom really has little to do with what you’ve described. This is about a bitter woman (as you described her) with kids. I understand that her experiences have been unfairly painful. And I can only imagine how her kids are coping, especially living with an unhappy parent. It does sound as if they have their eyes and hearts wide open for you, though. That’s great!

You’re a good man for loving her and her kids, Andy. But is she enjoying that cup of coffee with you as much as you are with her?

I think that’s a fair question to ask yourself. And her.

    Respectfully…
