Remember my Q and A this week with Louise Sloan, author of Knock Yourself Up: No Man? No Problem! A Tell-All Guide to Becoming a Single Mom?
Listen to this:
Today at Salon.com Louise Sloan explains to Katharine Mieszkowski that “becoming a single mother isn’t always easy but ultimately defies every right-wing stereotype.”
At this moment, readers are spewing harsh commentary online, like “the straight, married white male of three biological children” (his honest disclaimer) who says that Louise is an “upper-middle-class white woman pursuing her pregnancy fantasies.”
And “Jim,” who says, “Me, me, me, me, me…..it’s all about me:”
“Having a child should primarily be about the child, not just about the needs of the mother.
This is a social experiment that puts children at risk, and is not a phenomenon to celebrate.”
Mamas, it’s time to speak up! Let’s hear you.
Tell us why, first and foremost, our children need a loving and devoted parent. If kid your kid has two loving and devoted parents, bravo. But one parent — and a network of support from friends and family nearby — is plenty. Right?
Remember, the contest is still on! Comment here and have a chance to win Knock Yourself Up: No Man? No Problem! A Tell-All Guide to Becoming a Single Mom.

Dayum. Most of the straight single mothers I know who were never married to the father of their child had very good reasons for doing it this way. I don’t think a woman–or a man, for that matter–should have to wait to find a good person in order to have a child. Yes, one could argue that these folks so eager to start a family should look into adoption, but I don’t think that any child welcomed into a home with love and joy is at risk.
Single women who choose to have a child, whether through adoption or some form of conception, are indeed putting a child’s best interests first, and know that they will give that child a good life. I’m going to link to this and see if we can get anyone else over to the forum with some sanity and optimism.
