How to Play It Safe Online… With Kids

Do your kids play Club Penguin?

How about Webkinz? Or, Whyville for 13+?

Do you let your kids go online? Are you watching over their shoulders? Or washing the dishes? (like me!)

This week, Michelle Hainer, a writer and editor in New York, interviewed yours truly about “Safe Social Networking Sites Kids Love.”

I have mixed feelings about letting my Big Girl play online — I also just learned that Club Penguin was recently purchased by Disney (yikes) — but as I said to Michelle, Mae is “is improving her math skills because she’s learning to save money to buy things…”

Maybe? I hope so–

P.S. And no, the photo on Online Family is NOT of Mae and me… if you know us, you know that. Although I do have a few gray hairs now.

  1. Big A has webkins and her own email (which I monitor).

She came screeching around the corner one day to tell me that she won a free i-pod; to which we had to have the conversation again about where she is allowed to visit…while I’m washing the dishes. (Fine, laying on the couch watching football).

  2. Hilarious!.. I swear to you, the night before last, Mae screamed out, “Mom, I won an I-Pod!” and I screamed back, “Do NOT push that button!!”
“But, Mom, it says that I won–”
