Sometimes I get emails from readers that really make my day. Like the one I got out of the blue from Alaina S., a Senior Interactive Copywriter in Columbus, Ohio, who wrote to me about what it feels like to date again, now that she’s a single mom.
Check this out:
“I thought dating again would be like riding a bike…but it’s not,” Alaina says.
“The bike has changed (it has a baby basket in the front) and is much harder to steer because my vision is partially blocked.”
Isn’t that brilliant?
Alaina has inspired me to have a give-away contest this week. Please send me your perfect metaphor for “What’s it like to date as a single mom?”
i.e., Dating as a single mom is like ________________________
I’ll let my daughter, Mae, pick the winner out of a hat. The prize? I’ll mail you a free copy of Single Mom Seeking: Play Dates, Blind Dates, and Other Dispatches from the Dating World.
I can’t wait to hear what you come up with!

I already have, and have read, your book…but
Dating as a single mom is trying not to step on the cracks in the sidewalk while blindfolded and in high heels. It’s an adventure that makes you feel like a kid again, you need to find your rhythm to make it work, you can’t see whats ahead of you and could really get hurt.
Dating as a single mom is like being a chef. You have to figure out a way to add a new ingredient to an already great recipe.
It’s like having a fire re-ignited , feeling all calm and warm and toasty… but still worrying and hoping you won’t get too badly burned.
Wow! Brilliant? That’s very flattering. Thanks Rachel! Just got your book in my hands! Can’t put it down. Everyone keep trying because it’s really a fantastic prize. And at least we can try to sum up our wild single mama emotions.
Dating as a single mom is like eating a pint of (Ben & Jerry’s) ice cream when you’re on a diet. You know that you probably shouldn’t; it makes you scared and nervous; but you crave it, want it, need it, and think that doing so, even against your better judgment will be ok!
Dating as a single mom is like being a tourist in a place you’ve visited before — but things just don’t seem quite the same as what you remembered or in your photos. On the surface you understand what people are saying to you, the sights and smells are familiar, yet you feel slightly out of place. But on good days it can feel like you’re seeing a different, adventurous side of life you know.
I’m thinking this is a good Accidental Tourist post for my blog….
